Azerbaijani wine is produced in several regions throughout Azerbaijan. Prior to 20th century communist rule, Azerbaijan had a thriving wine industry that dated back to the second millennium BC. Azerbaijan, considered to be one of the birthplaces of the vine, is very rich in grape varieties, not only for the production of table or technical grapes, but also wild ones. According to a study, more than 600 local and introduced grape varieties can be found in Azerbaijan today.
In recent years, so-called gastronomic and wine tourism has become increasingly popular.
This tour is an ideal alternative for lovers of traditional culinary art, connoisseurs of wine and cuisine, as well as for everyone who wants to try something new.

We will visit a winery in Novkhani village.
A trip to the winery in the outskirts of Baku offers a unique opportunity for everyone to get acquainted to winery craft, learn the culture, technology and the ancient traditions of the production of the famous Azerbaijani wines and observe the production process.

Imagine pure, crystal-clear water cascading down from the great Caucasus Mountains, winding its way through the lavish land in the foothills of the valley and suffusing the sun-bathed vines. These ripe, abundant grapes are then collected and handled with care and love before being transformed by the apparent magic of a master into wine. This is what happens every year in the Savalan valley.

Now, on the slopes of the Greater Caucasus ridge and in unique climatic conditions there exists 350 hectare vineyards where 22 wine grape varieties and 12 table grape varieties are growing including, but not limited to Chardonnay, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Alicante Bouchet, Cabernet Sauvignon, Petit Verdot, Syrah, Riesling, Moscato White, Aleatico, Traminer and Verdejo. Most are the yield of seedlings from leading companies like Italy’s Vivai Cooperativi Rauscedo (VCR) and France’s Gontard Freres. The vines grows 400 meters above sea level, surrounded by the river, where the average temperature, the amount of precipitation and daily and annual ratio of sunshine hours consummately combine integrate with each other and create the most favorable conditions for growing grapes.

If you want to visit two oldest wine countries in the world – Azerbaijan and Georgia, do not miss this chance.

Most experts agree that the cradle of winemaking most likely resides somewhere in the Caucasus Mountain. Georgia claims to be the oldest wine region in the world due to wine residue found on the inner surfaces of 8000-year-old jars in the village of Shulaveri. Though Azerbaijan does not claim to be the oldest winemaking region in the world, it could be a contender. Indeed Dr. Patrick A. McGovern mentions evidence of grapes and possible winemaking dating to the 7th Millennium BC at Shomu-Tepe in his book Ancient Wine. Shomu-Tepe is located near Tovuz in the northern region of Azerbaijan near the Georgian border.
